Training with Intensity in Tennis

From my over 20 years of experience working with tennis players, I’ve observed a common trend that might sound blunt but is crucial to address.

Regardless of your location, coach, or training squad, it’s likely that your training intensity isn’t reaching its full potential. Many players operate at about a 5/10 level of exertion, which might not be enough if you’re aiming for higher achievements in tennis.

If your goal is to elevate your game, win more matches, or improve your on-court performance, it’s time to adjust your training intensity.

For those content with a more relaxed approach to tennis, that’s perfectly fine—everyone’s journey is unique.

Check out the short video below where I will explain training intensity in more detail, offer tips for improvement, and provide some practical homework!

Assessing Your Training Intensity:

Using the RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) scale discussed in the video, how would you rate your average training intensity?

If you needed to consistently maintain a training intensity between 7-9/10 during your practice sessions, what changes would you need to make?

Consider whether additional Tennis Fitness Training might be necessary to enhance your performance. Many players benefit from this approach—find out how we can assist you with it here.

Alternatively, a shift in mindset to embrace a higher level of discomfort during training could also be beneficial.

Whatever adjustments or additions you recognize as necessary to elevate your training intensity, I encourage you to address them promptly.
