About Course
Upon completion of this course, the learner will:
- understand the role of nutrition in sport
- understand the concept of energy balance
- understand the role of macronutrients in sport
- understand the role of micronutrients in sport
- be aware of methods for assessing dietary intake
- appreciate the principle of positive nitrogen balance
- understand the role and impact of pre-hydration, hydration, dehydration, and re-hydration
- understand the effect of pre-, during-, and post-exercise nutritional intervention
- be familiar with evidence-based practice in support of nutritional and recovery strategies
- be familiar with commonly used diets in sport and their impact, or lack of it, on performance
- be familiar with issues relating to supplements in sport
- be in a position to give sound basic nutritional advice to athletes and players
LEARNING OUTCOMES OF THE COURSE:
On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- display a broad understanding of the importance of energy and nutrition in sport
- be aware of his/her limitations with regard to their role in providing basic nutritional guidance and identification of deficiencies
- display a clear knowledge of the methods of assessing athletes’ nutritional needs
- display an understanding of the part played by carbohydrates for sports training
- display an understanding of the part played by protein for sports training
- display an understanding of the part played by fat for sports training
- display an understanding of the part played by minerals for sports training
- display an understanding of the part played by vitamins for sports training
- display a clear health and safety-conscious approach to their coaching practices
- demonstrate the ability to advise management on ordering pre-game and post-game meals for game day
- display a clear understanding of and ability to implement what is required in terms of team hydration management plans on training and game day
- demonstrate an understanding of handling nutritional advice from nutritional professionals to assist individual players if required
